Løveungen Simba kan næsten ikke vente til han bliver Løvernes Konge. Men vejen til tronen er lang. Først skal han blive voksen og lære at tage det ansvar, som følger med, når man skal være konge.
Han skal overvinde alle de farer, som ligger og lurer på en tronfølger.
Scar, Simba´s onkel, lægger sammen med hyænerne lumske planer, om at tage magten på Kongesletten. Det lykkes ham at narre Mufasa, Simba´s far, i døden.
Simba får skylden for Mufasas død, og stikker af.
