Efter Denahi har mistet sine to brødre i kamp med en bjørn, sværger han, at han vil have hævn! Han vil gøre alt for at finde bjørnen som har taget hans elskede brødre fra ham. Men hvad han ikke ved er, at hans yngste bror Kenai faktisk lever – men han er blevet forvandlet til en bjørn af De Store Ånder. Uden at vide det, jager Denahi altså sin egen bror!
For at klare sig, får Kenai hjælp af bjørneungen Koda, en sej lille vildbasse, der ved hvordan man overlever i naturen. Sammen med de to ikke så kvikke elge, Rod og Stub, hjælpes de ad for at klare sig gennem vildmarkens faretruende udfordringer. Men Denahi kommer nærmere og nærmere, og Kenai skal hurtigt finde bjerget hvor ”lyset rører jorden”, for kun dér, kan han forvandles tilbage til menneske igen...
