Michael Cimino's The Deer Hunter viser Vietnam-krigens effekt på de polsk-amerikanske stålarbejdere Mike, Nick, Stan og Steve og er berygtet for dens russisk roulette scener. Opdelt i fem sektioner viser filmen kontrasten mellem hjem og krig, og starter i Clairton, Pennsylvania hvor Mike, Nick og Stan fejrer Steven's bryllup, for efterfølgende at gå på jagt en sidste gang inden de skal af sted til Vietnam. Mike præker overfor Stan værdien af et "one shot" - hvor dyret skydes og dræbes med et skud.

Winner of 5 Oscars, Michael Cimino¿s Vietnam veteran masterpiece is re-released here as a Special Edition that includes interviews with the director and most of the principal cast. Michael, Nick, and Steven (Jon Savage) are three buddies from the steel mill town of Pittsburgh where they hang out in a local bar and enjoy deer-hunting at the weekends. Michael (Robert De Niro) and Nick (Christopher Walken) are also both in love with Linda (Meryl Streep), whose loyalties seem divided. However, their peaceful lives are soon to be shattered when they are enlisted in the airborne infantry to fight in Vietnam. After celebrating a goodbye at Steven's wedding they leave for South East Asia, eventually falling into the hands of the enemy. Despite their escape and subsequent return home, their lives are forever changed by their brutal experiences as POWs, typified by the now legendary Russian Roulette sequence. Also stars John Cazale and George Dzundza. |
